Every harvest, the village of Ashen Hollow sings the same seven songs at the same seven hours. Newcomer schoolteacher Mara thinks it's a quaint local tradition — until she notices the choir has thirteen members, and the village census lists only twelve.
“They sing so the fields stay quiet. I never asked what the fields would say otherwise.”
“Thirteen voices. Twelve names. Nobody in this village will do the arithmetic out loud.”
“The song never changes. That's not tradition. That's a warning on a loop.”
