The corkboard theory finally collapsed on Saturday, when Kevin knocked on Dave’s door holding a grocery bag and looking, for the first time in this entire investigation, deeply confused by Dave’s behavior rather than suspiciously evasive about it.

“You’ve been staring at me through the peephole for a week,” Kevin said. “I brought muffins. Are you okay?”

Dave looked at the muffins. He looked at the corkboard, visible through his own open door, dense with red string and increasingly unhinged annotations.

“I have some questions,” Dave said, “about your laundry schedule.”
