The spreadsheet had grown to four columns by Thursday, and Dave was no longer even slightly ashamed of that fact, which he recognized, distantly, as a red flag about his own priorities.

Column four was new: witnesses. Specifically, his roommate, who had started actively contributing sightings out of what Dave suspected was less concern for the truth and more raw entertainment at watching Dave’s slow descent into amateur surveillance.

“You could just ask him,” his roommate pointed out, not for the first time.

“And say what? ‘Hey Kevin, are you secretly fighting crime, please pass the mail while you answer’? No. I have a system.”

The system, by Friday, involved a corkboard.
