Deep Six — Chapter 2
The rival expedition’s camp was visible from the ridge by the second morning — smaller fires than Ren had expected, which told her something useful about how confident they were feeling about their own map.
“They’re moving faster than us,” her guide said, not looking up from the ropes.
“They’re moving faster toward the wrong pass,” Ren said, and did not entirely manage to keep the satisfaction out of her voice.
It wouldn’t last. She knew that. Whatever the cartographer had been protecting a century ago, it wasn’t going to stay hidden from two separate expeditions circling the same mountain for much longer — and she intended to be the one standing there when it finally gave itself up.
