Three siblings who haven't been in the same room together in four years come back to their childhood home to clear out their mother's belongings after her death, expecting a weekend of donation boxes and old furniture. Instead, “small things” turns out to be doing a lot of work in that plan: a decade of unopened letters addressed to a name none of them recognize, a second mortgage on the house nobody knew existed, and — three drawers deep in a filing cabinet none of them had the heart to go through until day two — a secret that rearranges everything they thought they understood about their parents' marriage. The eldest wants to handle it quietly and move on. The youngest wants answers before the house even sells. Between the three of them and one increasingly complicated inheritance, clearing out a house turns into finally, unavoidably, talking to each other for the first time in years.
“Grief doesn't arrive all at once. It arrives in drawers.”
“We came to clean out a house. We left with a lot more questions than boxes.”
“She kept everything. I think she was hoping someone would ask about it eventually.”
