The antique shop on Marlow Street has exactly six keys to its back room, held by exactly six people the elderly owner trusted — and exactly one dead body inside that room, on a night none of those six keys were used to open the door. Retired locksmith Edwin Hale spent forty years making locks for half the town and swore he was done being involved in other people's business the day he retired. That resolve lasts until the second body turns up in the same back room, this time clutching one of Edwin's own tools, and the six key-holders start looking at each other — and at him — like people trying very hard not to ask the obvious question out loud. Edwin knows every lock in that shop better than its own owner did. Working out which of six trusted friends is willing to kill twice to keep a secret is a very different kind of puzzle, and one he's running out of time to solve before he becomes key-holder number seven.

“A locked door only means one thing: somebody wanted you to believe it mattered.”
“I spent forty years making locks. I never once thought I'd have to unmake one.”
“Six keys, six suspects, and not one of them will look me in the eye.”
